The atmosphere was filled with drive blowing from the mountainous Armenian landscape and positive of the lovely audience resisting smoking to leave smokeless air for me while singing.

Grateful to “Luys” who invited Dogma to be part of the project which sounded a bit weird at the beginning, on learning the concept – Music which is not written, but drawn by the Armenian children in Yerevan, Gargar Village and Boston, through a music composition environment called “Hyperscore” invented and led by a renowned Composer and Inventor Tod Machover. (?)

A number of questions were followed, a couple of eyebrows were raised. However, everything became clear when met with the children, Tod in the screen at the other end of the world explaining the children here and there how to start composing music and working on the collaborative piece. “Do I understand the idea right? Is Hyperscore aimed at helping a person, who doesn’t have any musical education, to bring out, reveal the already existing music in him?”. “Well… only if there is music in him”, says Tod.

As a band which has always been for any undertaking with distinct ideas, we accepted the invitation gladly. Dogma was to perform 4 pieces written by the children.

A couple of hours at “Luys” office listening to over hundred pieces composed by the children and we choose about 20. A couple more hours of consideration and reconsideration on which pieces have the foundation to be viewed though our prism, discussions and quarrels as of how much we can interfere with the pieces, rehearsal, rehearsal, and rehearsal, and the 4 final pieces were chosen and ready:

1. Graceful march “Pirates Attack” by Gevorg Chshmarityan, Gargar Village.
2. Thoughtful psychodelic nightmare – “Dream” by Arman Shahverdian, Gargar Village.
3. Dogma’s ethnicity plus hyperbolic succession of dissonant chords “PB & Awesomness” by Christine Avagyan, Boston.
4. Rocky-Jazzy-Bluesy forgot-to-give-title piece “Hyperscore ex” by Alex Aslanyan.

A bit strange feeling for us though – not having played any covers before, performing our own original music only, we faced a dillema – are we doing cover of a song, which has never been played before though, or we are presenting our stuff, us not the only composers? Whatever… the pieces were performed, the young composers were satisfied

Can’t not mention Tod Machover here, whom we had the pleasure of meeting and knowing – a person whose love for innovative ideas is able to “infect” everyone around, who is in constant search of new scientific and seemingly uncombined combinations of music and technology. “Are you doing all this because you want to change the world around you, is it a dream thing?”, I’m asking. “Well, rather yes”, he nods and smiles.

Dogma will make part of the musical project “A to A: The World in Harmony”!

The concert pioneers a collaborative music composition process amongst children in Armenia and America led by renowned Composer and Inventor Tod Machover.

The project is a synergy between the Luys Foundation, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the United States Embassy in Armenia.

On Saturday, February 25, the “A to A : The World in Harmony” concert will take place simultaneously at the Aram Khachaturian Hall in Yerevan at 8pm and at the MIT Media Lab’s lecture hall in Boston at 11am.

The collective musical piece composed by the children as well as some of the individual works from the United States and Armenia will be played by the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Dogma Rock Band.

Four Musical pieces composed with “Hyperscore” by the children from the United States and Armenia will be played by Dogma with our own interpretation. Our sound engineer Serge Melqonyan will join us on the keyboard! The concert will be broadcast in 20 different countries including Armenian 1st Public TV satellite. Տիկնիկային թատրոն, նոյեմբերի տասներեք. «Դոգմա» ռոք խմբի համերգն այստեղ, այսօր ուներ առաքելություն` քանդել, տակնուվրա անել դոգմաները։ Վոկալի բեռն ամբողջ երեկո փայլուն տարած Զառա Գեւորգյանը, որ ստանձնել էր նաեւ խոսքի բեռը, այսպես ներկայացրեց. ««Դոգմայի» այս համերգը կոչվում է «ԱնդրԴոգմա», սա մի տրա՛նս-պո՛րտ է, որ տանելու է մեզ դեպի տրա՛նս, մի ճամփորդություն` դոգմաների արանքներով, միջանցքներով, դոգմաների տակով ու վրայով։ Դոգմայի տակ չմնալու համար պիտի նախ մտնել ու տակը կանգնել, unde՛r-sta՛nd, understand, հասկանալ, այսինքն` տակը կանգնել, տեսնել հիմքը։ Երբ տեսնում ես ինչ կա տակը` դոգման կորցնում է ուժը, այլեւս իշխանություն չունի։ «Դոգմայի» հետ այս ճամփորդությունը ձեզ կտանի դոգմաներով` կանգառ առ կանգառ, դոգմայից դոգմա, մինչեւ դառնաք dogmadig, ոչ թե դոգմատիկ, այլ` dogmadig, այսինքն` դոգմափոր, դոգմա փորող, դոգմայի տակը փորող, եւ սա անելու է «Դոգման», որի երաժշտությունը կհալեցնի դոգմաները, եւ դուք կհայտնվեք դոգմաներից անդին՝ Անդրդոգմա»։

Էթնիկ հղումների առումով «Դոգման» ինչ-որ տեղ համեմատելի է բրազիլական հայտնի «Սեպուլտուրա» խմբին, սակայն եթե «Սեպուլտուրան» իրեն թույլ է տալիս տարաէթնիկ ելեւէջների ուղղակի, ցիտատային, հաճախ ինքնանպատակ ներմուծումներ՝ մի բան, որ արդեն չարչրկված, էժանացված է «փոփ» երաժշտության կողմից, «Դոգմայի» հղում, ներմուծումները մոնոէթնիկ են` հայկական, ըստ այդմ` լավ մարսված-օրգանապես միահյուսված խմբի ոճին, երաժշտական սկզբունքներին, կոնցեպտներին, Զառայի ռոքային երգեցողության եւ պլաստիկայի չափազանց օրիգինալ մաներային։ Իր ռոքային վոկալն ազգային «սոուսներով», խաղիկներով հագեցրած-զարդարած Զառան երբեմն նաեւ օպերա-օպերետային երանգներ է հղում` որպես հեգնանք առ դասական պաթոս եւ ժուժկալություն, սակայն սա երբեմն էլ լուրջ է արվում, առանց հեգնանքի, ազդեցության ներկապնակը հարստացնելու, ուժգնացնելու համար։ Զառայի երգեցողությունն ուղեկցվում է նրա ուշագրավ, օրիգինալ պլաստիկայով,- ծանոթ ազգային, նաեւ անծանոթ` ենթագիտակցականով հուշվող ծիսական-արքետիպային տարրեր,- որը նույնպես ընդհանուր տպավորությունն ուժգնացնելուն է ծառայում, միեւնույն ժամանակ ինքնաբուխ է, ինչը ծայրահեղ հմայիչ է դարձնում Զառայի բեմական կերպարը (ի դեպ, երգերի տեքստերը նույնպես Զառայինն են` բացառությամբ երկուսի, որ Վիոլետ Գրիգորյանն է հեղինակել)։ Երգչուհուն հակակշիռ` զուսպ, համարյա ստատիկ են երեք երաժիշտները` կիթառահար Հենրիկ Գրիգորյանը, բաս-կիթառահար Վարդան Գրիգորյանը, թմբկահար Դերենիկ Վարդումյանը… Չէ, թմբկահարն «ի պաշտոնե» անկարող է ստատիկ լինել, սակայն հնարավորինս զուսպ է։ Այսպիսով, ուշագրավ երաժշտական պատկերին գումարվում է ուշագրավ վիզուալ պատկեր, խաչ, որի հորիզոնական` կիթառային թեւերը համարյա ստատիկ են` հակակշռելով ուղղահայաց վերին թեւի «վիբրատոն» եւ վարի թեւի պլաստիկ խրախճանքը։ Խաչի կենտրոնի թվացյալ պարապության մեջ հավաքվում-կենտրոնանում, հագենում-լարվում է երաժշտական մտահղացումը, հնչյունային միացյալ ծավալը եւ արշավում դահլիճ։ Հետաքրքիր է, որ այն, ինչ տեսնում-լսում էր հանդիսատեսը, հաճախ շատ ավելի խորքային, բարդ, սովորի համար կույր ու խուլ կետերի էր դիպչում, քան ուղենշում էր մուտքային խոսքը. չասվածի թաքուն ներկայության մոգությունն է, արվեստի իսկական ստեղծումը հեղինակի նշած շրջանակների մեջ չի տեղավորվում, ինքնուրույն գոյության է մղվում։ «Դոգման» վրդովվում է, ըմբոստանում` կենսոլորտ, պատերազմ, բռնություն, անտարբերություն, անհանդուրժողականություն, սիրո պակաս… Այս ուղերձներն ազդեցիկ են, կարեւոր, ակտուալ… Սակայն զգայուն ունկնդիրը որսում է նաեւ բնազդական ու ենթագիտակցական խորքերից եկող ուղերձներ, որոնք դժվարմեկնելի, կրքոտ վայելքով ներծծված բացարձակ ազատության զգացողություններ են պարգեւում, այս ենթագիտակցական հոսքերում լսելի են բողոքի ձայներ ընդդեմ մայրիշխանության, հայրիշխանության, առհասարակ որեւէ իշխանության, անտառային մեծ սարսափի, տոտեմների, կուռքերի, աստվածների, աստծո…

«Դոգման» փոխզիջման չի գնում, հանուն մեծ հանդիսատեսի ոչ մի հնչյուն չի զիջում, իր ծանր տեղը չի թեթեւացնում` ո՛չ դեպի ռոքնռոլայինը կամ բլյուզայինը, ոչ էլ դեպի փոփայինը թեքվելով. Դերենիկի զուտ ռոքային հստակ թմբկահարության աջակցությամբ Վարդանի մշտապես ճշգրիտ, ծանր բասը կայուն առանցք է, որն իր շուրջը հավաք է պահում հնչյունային ամբողջ ծավալը, կառուցվող երաժշտական ձեւերը, թվում է` թմբկահարի եւ բասահարի ներկայությամբ եթե ռումբ էլ պայթեցվի, նրանց չի շեղի ռիթմից: Այս հենքը Հենրիկին առավելագույնս ձերբազատում է, սակայն նա կուլ չի գնում սոլոկիթառային գլխապատառ վայրիվերումների մեջ սուզվելու գայթակղությանը, պահպանում է խմբի ընդհանուր ոճն ու սկզբունքները, Հենրիկի կիթառի արտաբերած հնչյունները զտված-ընտրված են, ժլատ եւ բոլորը` թիրախին։ Գործիքային խմբի այս զսպվածությունն ասես Զառային գրգռելու, սադրելու համար է նաեւ, նրան առավել ազատության մղելու համար, եւ Զառան իսպառ օգտագործում է ընձեռված հնարավորությունները։ Այս ամենի արդյունքը` հրաշալի համերգ, հրաշալի ռոք խմբի կատարմամբ։ Այո, ի դեմս «Դոգմայի», մենք ունենք ծանրակշիռ, բարձրաճաշակ ռոք խումբ, որն ի զորու է զարդարելու միջազգային ուզած մակարդակի ռոք հավաք։

Review of Dogma’s album Ethnic-Methnic by Dan Tordjman for

L’Arménie n’est pas spécialement connue pour être un vivier de groupes progressifs : voilà qui pousse à aborder Dogma avec prudence. Derrière ce nom pouvant prêter à confusion (puisque le film culte de Kevin Smith porte le même nom) se cache un groupe mené par Vardan (basse) et Heno (guitare) Grigoryan, tous deux musiciens reconnus en leur pays, notamment pour avoir joué dans Manic Depressive Psychosis. Ils sont accompagnés par Derik Vardumyan à la batterie et la délicieuse Zara Gevorgyan au chant. Nouvelle surprise : le chant est presque exclusivement en arménien, raison de plus de se laisser transporter, fermer les yeux et décoller.

Dès premières secondes du disque, le décor est planté : les guitares sont reines, à la croisée des chemins d’Iron Maiden et d’Opeth (« My Games » et « Impudent » en sont un exemple évident), et apparaissent en parfaite fusion avec la voix de Zara, ourlant des mélodies typiques et chères à l’Arménie. D’ailleurs, son chant tantôt saccadé tantôt follement lyrique n’est pas sans rappeler le travail que propose la pianiste Aziza Mustafah Zadeh. Entre deux morceaux énervés, une petite accalmie comme « Awakening » est bienvenue, avant de repartir sur les rythmes effrénés de « Fairytale » et du déjanté « Matchmaking ». Le disque se clôt en beauté, sur la pièce la plus progressive de l’album, « I’ll Stay Here », dont la montée en puissance pourrait ne pas être reniée par un certain Daniel Gildenlöw.

Pour un premier essai, Dogma n’est pas loin du coup de maître. La cohérence de l’album est à saluer, même si l’on est en droit d’attendre davantage de folie (pourtant, il y en a, sur Ethnic-Methnic) et de variété. Peut-être qu’à l’avenir la présence de claviers et, pourquoi pas de cordes, pourrait ajouter davantage de relief. Mais ne faisons pas la fine bouche : le potentiel est bien là et il est très prometteur.

For a first try, Dogma is not far from the master stroke. The consistency of the album is to be welcomed, even if we are to expect more madness (Yet there are on-Ethnic Methnic) and variety. Perhaps in the future the presence of keyboards, and why not strings, could add more relief. But do not be choosy: the potential is there and it is very promising.

Back in summer recommended by Ian Anderson Dogma was interviewed by the only music magazine solely devoted to progressive music in all its many guises – Classic Rock Magazine Presenting Prog.

Prog rock has undergone such a renaissance in the past three years it now forms a major and respected part of rock music as a whole, its influence ranging from as far as the original practitioners like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis and co through ‘80s standard bearers like Marillion and Asia through to the progressive movers and shakers of today; bands like Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater, Muse and Radiohead, The Mars Volta and Coheed & Cambria.

…Classic Rock Prog reflects this in its broad coverage of the genre. In any one issue you can find an old master like Mike Oldfield, Keith Emerson or Steve Hackett sharing their thoughts whilst young guns like Pain Of Salvation, Anathema, Touchstone or The Reasoning are outing forward their own case for creating a modern slant on the genre.

… The guy was Erwin Khachikian – very nice, talented and down to earth person whom I had the pleasure of knowing and wishing more songs like “Sometime”!

Here I wanted to dwell upon it, which would rather remind a boosting, but there early in the morning I received a mail from one of our good and loyal fans. I assume that he had kept all the impressions in his head and hurried to jot them down once he reached his computer…not to let them go. It was a review … of the concert … by Arthur Rosencrantz… a young, but promising guy… I got goose bumps as I read the review.. well, that was what we wanted to express… wish everyone had his sense of music.
